What are Some Best HR Practices in Response to Natural Disasters in Terms of Training and Communication?

    Get PDF
Today’s world is defined by, among other characteristics, borderless and unconventional threats, global challenges, and fast-paced change. HR has not been initially designed to organize or oversee crisis management. However HR’s role in training and development can contribute to an organization’s overall crisis management capacity, as well as to effective crisis communication in particular. Studies show that crisis-prepared companies have fewer crises to grapple with, stay in business longer and fare better in financial terms

Black hole hair in generalized scalar-tensor gravity

The most general action for a scalar field coupled to gravity that leads to second order field equations for both the metric and the scalar --- Horndeski's theory --- is considered, with the extra assumption that the scalar satisfies shift symmetry. We show that in such theories the scalar field is forced to have a nontrivial configuration in black hole spacetimes, unless one carefully tunes away a linear coupling with the Gauss--Bonnet invariant. Hence, black holes for generic theories in this class will have hair. This contradicts a recent no-hair theorem, which seems to have overlooked the presence of this coupling.Comment: 4+1 pages, PRL versio

A KPP road-field system with spatially periodic exchange terms

We take interest in a reaction-diffusion system which has been recently proposed [11] as a model for the effect of a road on propagation phenomena arising in epidemiology and ecology. This system consists in coupling a classical Fisher-KPP equation in a half-plane with a line with fast diffusion accounting for a straight road. The effect of the line on spreading properties of solutions (with compactly supported initial data) was investigated in a series of works starting from [11]. We recover these earlier results in a more general spatially periodic framework by exhibiting a threshold for road diffusion above which the propagation is driven by the road and the global speed is accelerated. We also discuss further applications of our approach, which will rely on the construction of a suitable generalized principal eigenvalue, and investigate in particular the spreading of solutions with exponentially decaying initial data.Comment: Updated version, minor typos and details fixe

Water Saving Technology in Chinese Rice Production - Evidence from Survey Data

Whereas water is an important input in rice production, China faces severe problems with increasing demand for water and limited water resources. In conventional paddy production, one of the most important irrigated crops, a significant amount of irrigation water is lost due to percolation and evaporation. Therefore, it exist a vivid research in water saving rice technologies. This paper analyzes the adoption of one of these water-saving rice production technologies, the so-called Ground Cover Rice Production System (GCRPS), in the Hubei province. Based on farm survey data several factors which affect the adoption decision could be identified. The adoption decision is treated as a binary choice problem and therefore a probit model is used for the econometric analysis. The main determinants of the adoption decision are the number of previous adoptions, the membership in an extension service and the income of the household. Additionally, soil characteristics show a significant impact on the probability of adoption.China, technology adoption, water, GCRPS, probit, Crop Production/Industries, O30, Q16,

Wnt5a Signaling in Normal and Cancer Stem Cells.

    Get PDF
Wnt5a is involved in activating several noncanonical Wnt signaling pathways, which can inhibit or activate canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in a receptor context-dependent manner. Wnt5a signaling is critical for regulating normal developmental processes, including stem cell self-renewal, proliferation, differentiation, migration, adhesion, and polarity. Moreover, the aberrant activation or inhibition of Wnt5a signaling is emerging as an important event in cancer progression, exerting both oncogenic and tumor suppressive effects. Recent studies show the involvement of Wnt5a signaling in regulating normal and cancer stem cell self-renewal, cancer cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. In this article, we review recent findings regarding the molecular mechanisms and roles of Wnt5a signaling in stem cells in embryogenesis and in the normal or neoplastic breast or ovary, highlighting that Wnt5a may have different effects on target cells depending on the surface receptors expressed by the target cell

Lens ER-stress response during cataract development in Mip-mutant mice

AbstractMajor intrinsic protein (MIP) is a functional water-channel (AQP0) that also plays a key role in establishing lens fiber cell architecture. Genetic variants of MIP have been associated with inherited and age-related forms of cataract; however, the underlying pathogenic mechanisms are unclear. Here we have used lens transcriptome profiling by microarray-hybridization and qPCR to identify pathogenic changes during cataract development in Mip-mutant (Lop/+) mice. In postnatal Lop/+ lenses (P7) 99 genes were up-regulated and 75 were down-regulated (>2-fold, p=<0.05) when compared with wild-type. A pathway analysis of up-regulated genes in the Lop/+ lens (P7) was consistent with endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-stress and activation of the unfolded protein response (UPR). The most up-regulated UPR genes (>4-fold) in the Lop/+ lens included Chac1>Ddit3>Atf3>Trib3>Xbp1 and the most down-regulated genes (>5-fold) included two anti-oxidant genes, Hspb1 and Hmox1. Lop/+ lenses were further characterized by abundant TUNEL-positive nuclei within central degenerating fiber cells, glutathione depletion, free-radical overproduction, and calpain hyper-activation. These data suggest that Lop/+ lenses undergo proteotoxic ER-stress induced cell-death resulting from prolonged activation of the Eif2ak3/Perk-Atf4-Ddit3-Chac1 branch of the UPR coupled with severe oxidative-stress
